Categorizing Privacy Tech
Part 2 of a blog series on the TROPT Defining the Privacy Tech Landscape Whitepaper 2021

Earlier this week, we at The Rise of Privacy Tech ( TROPT ) released the TROPT Defining the Privacy Tech Landscape Whitepaper 2021, in which we define privacy technology, pulling from foundational privacy and technology concepts. We summarized how we went about defining privacy tech in our first blog post of this series.
Beyond defining privacy tech, we also introduced the TROPT Privacy Tech Stack as a framework for categorizing privacy tech. The TROPT Privacy Tech Stack is organized into three major sections: B2B, B2B2C, and B2C.
Most of the mature privacy tech solutions fall into the B2B space. We broke down B2B privacy tech into two sections: data lifecycle tools and development lifecycle tools. Data lifecycle tools address privacy problems during at least one of the following stages in the data lifecycle: collection, use, sharing, storage, and/or retention.
The emergence of developer privacy tech solutions is particularly exciting. We’re seeing privacy tech beginning to shift left from the data lifecycle to the development lifecycle, addressing privacy problems at earlier stages. Development lifecycle privacy technologies address privacy problems during at least one of the following stages in the development lifecycle: training, requirements, design, build, verification, production, and/or incident response.
We also cover some of the early B2C and B2B2C privacy tech categories. B2C privacy tech tools are slowly emerging and gaining increasing adoption, albeit more slowly than the B2B space. B2B2C privacy tech tools bridge together the B2B and B2C sides of privacy tech, serving both businesses and consumers.
Last but certainly not the least, we present the TROPT Privacy Tech Stack plus privacy tech’s primary adjacent industries: cybersecurity, data governance, identity management, martech & adtech, data infrastructure, legaltech, and web 3.0.
