Home on the range: To whom do the Montana lands belong?

With a population that finally broke one million, the people are the land. There are the mining and timber families in the west, the ranching families in the east, and many other creeds and colors in between.
But the image of Montana is incomplete without mention of the birds and the bears and the many species that roam the Montana plains and perch on the mountain pines. And these animals too have a stake in the 146,000-square-foot Big Sky state.
