“A happy ending is not the same as happily ever after…” — Wiess

How it Ends, by Laura Wiess, is a tragically beautiful story of a young girl, and the truth she was never told.

Hanna has a tough life growing up but, with the help of her grandmother, she always finds a way through. She vicariously lives through the adventurous tales of Gran’s younger years, and eventually makes it to high school where nothing is what she dreamt it would be. And just when Hanna needs her Gran’s advice the most, it is no longer there. Rather, she is faced with the truth, but she is completely unaware of what that truly means.

This book starts slow and is a bit underwhelming, but leaves me in tears and utter shock by the end. It is beautifully deranged and astonishing, while simultaneously relatable and heartwarming. This book will leave readers speechless and longing to both put it down and never look back, but also to start from the beginning and never stop re-reading it. Wiess takes a common concept and runs with it into the great unknown, creating a masterpiece that will bring readers on a rollercoaster of passion, terror, defeat, and love. A story within a story within a story, How it Ends is a must-read for all ages, and is truly the definition of a beyond-talented writer piecing together a timeless work of art.
