The fast-food industry made over $570 billion in 2019. Ultra-processed food has a bad reputation, but still, it makes billions.

There is a warning. Too much of these foods is going to make us obese and give us heart disease and diabetes. When you think about processed foods, you think of pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs, crisps, snacks, and sweets. You may as well include sugary and artificially sweetened drinks.

Remember, processed foods include bread, cheese, canned vegetables, frozen fruit and vegetables, and the list goes on. How do we determine which are bad?

Food processing

Food processing can include freezing, canning, baking, and drying. There is a difference between microwavable frozen pizza, a cheap supermarket white loaf, and an artisan sourdough bread.

Ultra-processed food is the term used to describe food that is industrially produced. However, not all foods with added ingredients are ultra-processed.

Ultra-processed

Some ultra-processed foods can be marketed as healthy, natural, organic, or low in fat, low in sugar; these words describe the original ingredients. They don’t refer to the process of how the food was made or its final product.
