Dehydration is the result of not drinking enough water. It can cause your brain to shrink and can lead to chronic, life-threatening conditions like kidney failure.

There are several signs that you are beginning to suffer from dehydration — feeling thirsty, urinating less often, feeling dizzy, or lightheaded.

You should be sure to drink plenty of fluids each day in order to prevent any potential risks to your health.

Dehydration Risks in the Brain

Dehydration is one of the most common medical problems in the world. When you are not drinking enough fluids, your body starts to go into an emergency state. It needs to conserve water in order to survive.

Without the proper amount of water, people start to suffer some symptoms. Some of these are headaches, dizziness, and mood changes being among the more common symptoms.

The Brain is made up of 75% water and dehydration can cause it to shrink. When this happens you are at risk for dementia, memory loss, and other cognitive disorders.

Effects of Dehydration on the Brain

Dehydration occurs when water from the body is lost faster than it can be replaced. A person is considered dehydrated if he has less than 2 liters of fluid in his body.

Dehydration Can Have Many Effects On The Brain:

Decreased ability to concentrate and focus

Feeling stressed or anxious

Difficulty with decision making and problem solving

Trouble remembering information or thinking of solutions to problems

How Much Water Do You Need?

It is estimated that the average person needs 2.4 liters of water per day. If you are active, you will need more than the average amount.

There is no specific answer to how much water you should drink, as everybody’s needs are different. The amount of water you need also depends on your age, height, weight, and build.

For example, if you are an athlete who exercises every day, then you will need to drink more water than someone who doesn’t exercise or has a sedentary job.

What are the Signs & Symptoms of Dehydration?

Signs Of Dehydration Can Include:

Thirst

Sunken eyes

Dry mouth

A headache

Decreased urination frequency while increased urination volume.

Water is important because it is composed of hydrogen and oxygen. These two elements are important for producing energy that is used by muscles, tissues, and organs.
