Are you stuck in a dilemma whether you should switch your discipline in academia or not? Well, you need not think twice. After all, it is never too late to follow your heart!

A survey conducted by Guidance Council (2010) suggests, approximately 1 in 10 people in the United Kingdom have a current intention to change their career; which means every year approximately 2.5 million people are considering for a career switch. Do you find yourself to be from the same pool? Are you unable to decide if you should take the road less traveled or not? Do you feel that what you have studied is not what you wish to practice professionally? Well, let me tell you that it is absolutely normal to feel that way. Switching disciplines after pursuing a Ph.D. is rather seen to be very common these days. It might not be an easy choice during the outset but at the end of the day, it will all be worth it as long as you work with the pursuit of excellence.

You already have skills you require

Pursuing a doctorate in any field of interest contributes indispensably towards the overall grooming of an individual. It not only provides first-hand exposure to the world out there but also expands the individual’s vision and perspective towards life; enhancing competitive qualities like problem-solving ability, group building, team spirit, working under stressful conditions, and analytical ability. These qualities prove to be the beacon of light for the individual to pave the way for their field of interest and shape the future in the new avenues that they wish to explore.

According to Brinkley (2006) and Leadbeater (1999), ‘Doctoral education has become of paramount significance in a world where knowledge becomes the new ‘fuel’, the ultimate economic renewable to economic growth leading to a knowledge-based economy.’ So, Ph.D. holders are seen to have effective and efficient time management ability, communication skills and self-awareness which strengthens their foundation stone; giving them an edge in the industry.

It’s never too late to explore

More we study a subject, the better we know about it. Similar is the case for all Ph.D. holders who get an in-depth insight into their respective subject while pursuing a doctorate and more often than not, they tend to realize that there’s so much more to this world that they wish to explore.

Many eminent personalities like Julia Child, Harrison Ford, and Nicolas Vonarx switched their careers mid-way and decided to follow their passion; ever since then, there has been no turning back. So, if the thought of switching your career after pursuing Ph.D. in some different domain strikes you hard, just do not try to skip the contemplation and rather critically analyze the situation to put your best foot forward.

Try to answer the following questions honestly and you’ll have clarity in your decision making.

- Where are you?

- Why are you here?

- Where do you want to be?

- Why do you want to be there?

- How will you get there?

Optimism is better than Skepticism

Deciding to switch your career after Ph.D. might appear to be a really challenging and risky task but do not let the skepticism overpower your interest in seizing some different opportunity which is waiting to be explored. In such a scenario, what will keep you going is your perseverance, indomitable will and an optimistic approach towards life. So, have faith in your ability and always remember that no education ever goes in vain. All the knowledge and expertise that you attain while pursuing doctorate will help you sail through the journey of your life.

Just keep going and never give up!
