As Oktoberfest kicks off today with one of the ultimate Longwood traditions and recruiting tools, Color Wars, and for the first time in over seven years, it will not be followed by the start of WMLU’s (formerly) annual “Battle of the Bands” competition, typically held on Stubbs Mall so people can rock out on the Friday of Oktoberfest.

Nevertheless, if Longwood-ians (the Longwood-anese?) are still looking for some entertainment, a few student organizations and local businesses are hosting events on Friday evening:

Black Student Association — their annual masquerade ball in the Student Union from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

They use their ball each year to raise money for their organization and can donations for the local F.A.C.E.S., currently located in downtown Farmville, although they are looking to make a move in the future. Costs $1 or one can for entry.

Waterworks Players — presents “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike”

The local theatre’s latest play featuring multiple Longwood students will show for the final weekend, running for two weeks total. A few Longwood students are featured in the play as well. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased online.

On Saturday, the 2016 Mortor Board showcases all the work they’ve done to arrive here, at the delayed, but hopefully amazing Oktoberfest.

Booths, beer garden, concerts, student entertainment, food, beer garden— all the classic Oktoberfest components will combine on Saturday.

Speaking of (beer gardens) concerts, one change has been made since the original band announcement, Baby Bash canceled and was replaced with Chingy, rapper who rose to fame in the mid-2000s and sang songs like “Right Thurr” (I may have forgotten an ‘r’) and “Dem Jeans.”

Here is the schedule Mortor Board has provided including student performances until 2:00 p.m. and band entertainment beginning at 2:15 p.m. with Dale and the ZDubs:

Spirit Leaders & Klowns : 12:00–12:15

Student Entertainment: 12:15–2:00

Dale and the ZDubs: 2:15–3:15

Raelynn: 3:30–4:30

Major and the Monbacks: 4:45–5:45

Chingy: 6:00–6:45

The Last Bison: 7:00–8:00

The Maine: 8:30–9:30

Luckily, it appears as though fall will peek its head out on campus for Oktoberfest with the weather topping off at a perfectly crisp 62 degrees. Send any more questions you have to The Rotunda or myself personally and we’ll continue to send you the word.
