The Olympics are fast approaching this July 2024. The games have come a long way from their origins in Ancient Greece to the modern era.

It seems like just the other day we had the games in Tokyo. Now, it is the turn of Paris.

“Athletes show us that, despite all our differences, it is possible for humankind to live together in peace”

There is a call for change, but some organizations have been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century, fighting tooth and nail to halt the change.

When the games were founded, women were only there to look pretty and applaud. But now women participate as competitors and fully take part.

Women take part, and we have ‘teams’ at the Olympics. This was frowned upon by Pierre de Coubertin — the founder of the modern Olympic games.

Pierre wanted to keep the games as close to the original games as possible with the individual at the forefront of everything

The games have been changing but not at the pace of change in present-day society. The Olympics need to embrace change to stay relevant to society’s changes.

After many years of pressure and young people doing their own thing, the Olympic committee is starting to change.

At the last games, we had skateboarding.

Who grew up skateboarding? Come put your hands up… or BMX biking?

I just loved to do both. I could never dream that they would now be Olympic events. And there is more to come.

Here are some of the games we played as youngsters that are now trying to become Olympic sports:

  • Ultimate, which to you and me is Frisbee. We used to play after school and on holiday at the beach. Brilliant game.
  • Teqball, which is played on a curved table tennis table, but when we were growing up, we called it head tennis. You can use any part of your body like Teqball.
  • Dodgeball, Who has not played this game if you haven't you need to it is a really great and funny game unless you get the ball in the face.

I will end this with a game I have never played but my American cousins can fill in the blanks it;s called Flag Football it’s on it’s way to the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

So dear readers change is coming slowly but it’s coming, if an organisation of any kind wants to stay relevant to its customers it has to change or it will cease to exist

If you have played any of the games mentioned let me know what you think of them joining the Olympics.

Vince Vaughn in a very funny film Dodgeball said there are five Ds of Dodgeball: dodge, duck, dip, dive, and… dodge. Lol.

Yes, dodgeball is coming to the Olympics, hopefully soon, so I can wear my Spandex like Ben Stiller.
