The loss of shade

The brown always appeared more brown, and the green more green, the roots and the leaves reminded me of the shades I’d never seen

Following his own investigative instincts, he stumbled upon me. He was still doubtful, he’d taken his time, had a fair share of vacillation, but he was here with a resolve and that first impression of his always strung truth. We came home together, I liked his place, I could sense a positive vibe around. I was super excited for the journey ahead.

The partnership was surreal. I was a bit scared to begin with, a bit cautious, but somehow had the faith, he had my back right from day 1 and the aspect of mutual respect was heavenly. A journey to behold for a destination unknown. Things got better and better, or maybe the perspectives did. We’d formed a bizarre bond, he always say that he’d viewed the world from my lens. And I’d soon resemble an emoji with teary eyes and a smiling face.

We’d been on an unique adventurev all this while. It might take a while for me to recount the places we’d experienced together. We loved the pacific coast from San Francisco, we’d often go there. We adored trees and would end up of on trails with a lot of trees. He often spoke about visiting the Redwood Forests again. We explored the Bernese Oberland region. We went to a few other breathtaking national parks, visited crystal clear lakes, sunk in magnanimous valleys, climbed pristine mountains. Every place had its own story to tell and we tuned in to the right frequency to patiently listen and resonate with all of it.

Adventure would spring up once in a while and we’d often embark on it together. We’d both had a pretty decent record with adventure. He was all prepared with his kayak, he was excited, his arms and abs were ready. I was equally excited as well. The weather was just perfect for this setting.

Getting in the water was smooth, we were steady in a while and we would take lengthy breaks to appreciate the skyline, the dockyard, the mountains ahead, and the trees and birds around. On our way back, water filled up on one side of the kayak and the kayak equilibrium was now a pendulum. Soon balance left us and we were in the water all of a sudden. The water was deep, the contact was lost. That’s our last memory together.

It took me time to sink in, quite literally, the water in the lake was quite deep. He’d managed to reach the shore, he took some time to sink in with this thought. We’d broken the partnership, we both were shattered. I’d never told him that I had an amphibian heritage and I could survive under water. I would now have a different view altogether, I was amongst the marine friends under water, I hope to share that perspective with him. I know he’d be rooting for me and I’d be rooting for me. Our partnership was still on
