Face in the mud

I awoke in the mud, face down.

The rain was still pouring.

I could hear the music in the background.

I crawled on my knees for a while.

When I finally sat on my feet, I stared up at the dark blue sky.

The rain poured down my face.

My dress whites were done for.

I managed to stagger to my feet.

I hailed a cab.

The cabby asked me, “where are you headed?”

I answered, “back to base, this civilian shit isn’t for me.”
