Thoughts from our intern
Ever wondered what it’s like to do work experience with us? Hazel fills you in…
Here at Book House, the lovely Hazel has been interning with us and helping out in the design and editorial department. Since we like to get involved, theSalariya blog decided to ambush Hazel and pick her brains. Just what does an intern actually DO? Is it worthwhile? Fun? Is there any tea involved? Here’s what she had to say…
“As part of my university course, I needed to complete a workexperience placement during the summer. I’ve been interested in publishing for a while, and wanted to look for a local publishers that would give me experience as to what the industry entails.
Salariya Book company is a lovely publishing company; it seems very personal with a great work ethic , and everyone has been working together and chatting throughout the day. Over my time here I have done a lot of page layout and editing, and it’s been really cool to see how a book concept is brought to life.
It was great to work on Photoshop and InDesign, which helped me gain new skills that will definitely help me later on. I was given written plans or ideas of the books and I was allowed to create the layout for each, which has been really interesting, and allowed me to work independently. It’s exciting to see new books printed out, and being here has helped me see the whole process of publishing, which is exactly what I wanted from this experience.
Everyone here is dedicated and passionate, and it’s honestly been a great experience that has taught me a lot. Anyone wanting an insight into the world of publishing through work experience should definitely apply here! The people here trust you with a lot, it’s not just a work experience where you make tea and watch people, instead you are given big jobs to do and challenged everyday. I have a great insight into the industry now, and I am definitely thinking of pursuing publishing after my course.”
