Angry Birds Reloaded on Apple Arcade — Cute and Smart
The very first smartphone I purchased, after much resistance, was a bare bones 3 inch android phone. By the time I bought it, almost everyone around me was using a smartphone. I never liked phones. My current daily driver is an iPhone XS Max, and in the last one year, I may have made less than 50 phone calls.
That’s not a typo. I have literally made less than 50 phone calls in the last one year.
For me, the true appeal of a smartphone were the games I could play on it. I never had any interest in using social media or chatting. That leaves, apps and games. Immediately after installing, I bought angry birds (back then, it was a paid app) and started playing.
I liked it. It was cute. sling things. physics based problem solving. Also, very cute. Then, in 2012, when I bought my first proper smartphone with a good display, was a Lumia 510. Again, Angry Birds was the first game I purchased.
Reloaded Indeed
Apple Arcade has been putting out a lot of ‘nostalgia’ games in its service. That’s its appeal — pulling on my nostalgia. Right now, if you go to the mobile app store, you will see that there are several angry birds games. All of them are ad supported or financed with in app purchases.
Here, I think, we have like a ‘best of best’ hits of all the good puzzles of Angry birds game over the years. It has been more than 5 years since I played angry birds. Mostly because of the in app purchases. This game has incredible resolution, game design, music…it’s all there.
There is such a joy, in finishing each level after level, and keep going at it. One thing though, now, angry birds has these ‘power ups’. They are fun, but, I found them frustrating. I don't know how to use them, as they make a simple game complex.
Then, buying them using the stars is hard to do.
Also, there seems to be an odd thing going on. I am simply not smart enough to get 3 stars on all the levels. I tried for a couple of days, and a few levels. Got 3 stars for sure. However, it got tiring and joyless very fast. So, my suggestion is, forget all those bonus power ups. Forget the 3 stars and just play the game. It’s better that way.
Final Note
As I went level after level in angry birds, I could not help but appreciate how unique and varying the levels are. After almost 100 or 200 levels, the levels kept surprising me. Once I finish all these 100s of levels, I am definitely up for playing it again.
This is a very good edition of Angry Birds. The sling shot mechanism is no longer cool as it was 10 years ago, but the birds are still super cute and super fun.
