Netflix India Price Cut — Still Too Expensive
Ever since the pandemic reduced me to povery — god’s blessings, thanks to reducing debt and improved earnings, I should be out of poverty soon — I have been very careful about the subscriptions I pay for.
For my entertainment needs, I have retained two subscriptions.
- Amazon Prime Video— I have been a prime user since Amazon came to India some 7 or 8 years ago. I order a lot of stuff, and the free shipping alone is worth the annual subscription. Prime Video is simply a nice, almost free bonus to have.
- Apple TV+ — I have the Apple One bundle which includes iCloud Storage, Music, Arcade and Apple TV+. I play a ton of games on the iPad and I do listen to all the music. Similar to the Prime subscription, TV + is a nice bonus thing to have.
I also remember the exact moment when I cancelled my Netflix subscription.
I finally Cancelled My Netflix (India) Subscription
I have written about Netflix, many times. When it had its global launch (including India), I was excited. I signed up…
This week, I read that Netflix has, finally, reduced its prices. Netflix India is the HBO Go joke meme, for, India, of course.
Almost everybody I know who uses Netflix, does not pay for it. I am not even talking the super expensive 499 plan. I have seen people, avoiding having to pay 199 for the cheap as salt, mobile only plan. I once, accidentally glanced on a random person’s Netflix app opening page.
There were over 25 profiles! For a basic, mobile only 199 plan!
I have said this before, and I will say it again. Here in India, if there is a way to get something for free, even if it is only 199 rupees, we will try to get it for free. It’s not unnatural in India, to go to great lengths to save a single rupee.
That is also why, Netflix reducing the price from 199 to 149, makes no difference.
Netflix Thinks India is USA
I decided to log back to my old Netflix account and see how the prices have reduced. There is indeed a basic plan that costs 199/-. Thats good. However, Netflix has accidentally killed its own basic plan by limiting the streaming to 480p.
I am sorry Netflix India. If you are expecting me to pay 6000/- rupees annually, just so that I can watch Stranger Things and Witcher, the only two good shows you have.
All said and done, Netflix continues to shoot itself in the foot with unreasonably high prices. Now that Disney has it’s own streaming service, and everybody else, there are even less Hollywood content on Netflix.
Unless the prices become comparable to what Prime Video India and Disney Plus India (and offer annual packages), I dobut I will pay for Netflix. I dont mind not watching Witcher and Stranger Things.
