Nostalgia — That One Time When I Received The Microsoft MVP Award

Ah man. That award.

Almost 8 years ago, I received this award from Microsoft. I was so poor back then, I had to keep the award on the floor for there was no furniture in the entire house.

In 2012, for reasons I do not quiet understand, I was infatuated with windows phone OS and windows phone devices sold by Nokia. Back then, iPhone and Android was all the rage. For me, if I ever bought a smart phone, it had to be windows phone.

Back then, I was working as a part time faculty. I somehow saved up 10,000 rupees. In 2012, that was a huge amount. (Today, of course, I make that much money in a single day, on occasion). It took me, many weeks to save that kind of money.

With that money, I bought a Lumia 510. When that phone arrived, via online delivery, I was overjoyed. Then, from 2013, I started hanging out on the Microsoft Answers Community. I was only then starting my freelancer career. I did not have much work. So, I would get up, and spend all day on the community, helping other windows phone users.

Then, the next day, I would see how many of my posts were marked as answered, upvoted and so on. I started collecting badges and accolades like crazy. Occasionally, people would say thanks, and that was all I needed.

Then, months rolled by, and some dude from Microsoft Bangalore, contacts me. He says, that I have been recognized, and then, this award shows up in the mail around the 1st week of January.

Final Note

Once I received the award, the salesman in me, obviously started showing it off. Very soon, my earnings increased. I started getting assignments, more than before.

Today, god’s grace, my life is good. I thank this award, and by extension, Microsoft and .NET and C #, for making my life better.

I work as a full time freelance coding tutor. Hire me at UpWork or Fiverr or Stack Overflow. My personal website is here. Find more of my art at Behance and Unsplash. Also, I have a Podcast about everyday life. And, a 2nd Podcast, where I talk about freelancing.
