One Year Work Anniversary With UpWork Client — Freelancer Stories
Even amongst freelancers, at least in India, I am a rarity. I am a full time freelancer. I don’t have a day job to fall back on. I am freelancing, and that’s my revenue stream.
There are many wisdoms related to freelancing that I have gained in the last 9 years of this freelancing life.
One of them is that, it’s cheaper (in terms of time, effort, mental health strain and everything other thing that goes into finding a new client) to maintain a client than getting a new one. I am a firm believer in this, and work extra hard to ensure this happens with as many clients as possible.
By my estimation, 90 % of monthly income, has been from repeat clients who have been working for me for at least 3 months. I have a very high retention rate when it comes to retaining clients.
Then again, very few projects actually go beyond a few months. Now that I have retired from developer roles, and focusing exclusively on tutoring, the client work is successfully completed in 3 to 6 months. That is why, even for me, when a client has been hiring for more than a year, is a moment for celebration.
That happened this month. About a year ago, this female client hired me to teach her .Net essentials. We took care of that, but, since then, she has kept hiring me, to learn more and more of .Net.
We just kept going.
Every now and then, we do have a personal chat. When my wife left me and took the kids with her, this client comforted me.
Then, when my parents also betrayed my trust, this client, again, was there to say some kind words and keep me calm and composed.
Now, god’s blessings, touch wood, my life is slowly getting better, the client is happy for me, that, after a long struggle, at least some parts of my life are falling in place. So, I thank god for giving me such a good client. And, if this client reads this post, I thank her too.
