Restored my Developer Home Office to its Pre-Pandemic Glory. Yes.
With the big green dollars once again flowing to my coffers, I have replaced every ageing computing device with new ones. Jay, is once again, ready for some big, massive projects.
The pandemic has had devastating consequences for me. The usual things. Lost my company. Wife leaving me and taking the kids with her. Other related, causalities.
As I work hard towards restoring at least some aspects of my pre-pandemic life, the highest priority is rebuilding the massive home office infrastructure that I used to have.
In a nutshell, I used to have 6 computers, plus multiple apple smartphones and tables and a massive collection of accessories to ensure I work fast, and without any interruption.
It may seem like overkill, but I guarantee my clients, 99.99 % delivery. I like to be prepared. Deliver what was promised. I do that by ensuring that I have a backup, for the backup, for the backup.
This also means, every few months, at least one gadget will age out, requiring replacement or massive repairs. For 2 and half years, from January 2020 to June 2022, I was unable to buy things. I was struggling to pay for food and rent. On top of that, having to adjust my mind and body to live without the support of spouse and kids, took its toll on me.
Fortunately, this year, I have learnt to adjust to life as a man who is single after marriage. A man who is a father, but without the kids in his life. Sure, I still get some panic attacks occasionally, but, otherwise, I have learnt to live with the pain.
Parallelly, as my demons are contained, I am able to focus on work. Able to take on ever more challenging work, and thankfully, my clients, to whom I owe my life, have been paying me well. This has allowed me to reduce my debt considerably, and also allow me to replace my massive collection of outdated computers, iPhones and iPads and related accessories.
As I write, at last, I have restored my home office to its pre-pandemic glory. I once again feel confident about being able to deliver the best I can to my clients. I have new computers, new iPhones, new accessories, new monitors, new everything.
As I say all the time: A developer is like a knight. A knight is only as good as the horse he rides. A developer is only as good as the computing hardware he has.
Now, god’s blessings, client’s grace, touch wood, I have the computing prowess to match my developer and coding tutor skills.
