The Slightly Awkward Upwork Connect Situation
Upwork is one of my dozen different lead generating sources. As a full time, freelancer for 10 years, I add my thoughts about this ‘connect’ system, which is fair but also like a ‘pay to win’ thingy.
online platforms of any type and shape, must find a way to secure an ongoing revenue stream. Perhaps, it is greed. Perhaps it is a neccessity. Whatever it is, it is live and let live. How I run my business is my business.
Similarly, how Upwork decides to run its business is, well, Upwork’s business.
Almost every day, I see on linked in (where else, will I see it?) freelancers endlessly complaining about the connect system.
They share screenshots of other, more well-endowed freelancers bidding with dozens of connects. The logic here is that, for whatever reason, clients only look at the first few applicants. Apparently, the entire world is filled with clients who cannot be bothered to scroll down past the top 3 applicants.
Since that is world, we live in, I don’t blame Upwork for trying to make some money of this ‘world who cannot scroll past 3 applicants.
But of course, just like in real life, it is a world of ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’. There are always freelancers who are better off, and hence can buy as many connects as they want.
I am from sales background. I am very good. If I wasn’t that good, I would not be a full-time freelancer, and fairly successful at that, for 10 years. The more you apply, the more visibility you have, the more are your chances of getting to meet a potential customer.
And, there more you will close a sale.
The more revenue you make.
And, of course, the more connects you can buy.
And, the circle of life, is hence, completed.
I work as a full-time freelance coding tutor. Hire me at UpWork or Fiverr or Stack Overflow. My personal website is here. Find more of my art at Behance and Unsplash and ArtStation.
