You are finally ready to dip your toes in e-commerce.

The website is fully set-up, social media business pages created, a few posts here and there, and now all that’s remaining is for you to ‘get discovered‘ by your customers who’ll be screaming, “Take my Money Now!”.

You have done your time. You have paid your dues. You have poured your heart, sweat, blood and tears out. The gods of entrepreneurship will now heap blessings upon you for all your hard work. So now you take a break (you deserve it after all, right? RIGHT?). You wait for the phone to start ringing. For the orders to start streaming in.

You wait for a few minutes, a few hours, a few days. You wait for the frenzy of eager customers to realize how your product or service is going to change their world for the better.

You hit refresh, and still… nothing. Tumbleweed City.

Why? You have no freakin clue. After all, your product or service offering is supposed to sell itself, right? RIGHT?

If the scenario above has ever happened to you, then the painful slap of reality hitting you on the face is one of the greatest lessons life has handed to you. If this hasn’t happened to you, then thank your lucky stars. It was bound to happen sooner or later.

Below we are going to explore 3 main reasons why your online business needs marketing:

  1. To create brand awareness for your business.
  2. To stop stealing from your customers.
  3. To establish trust within your niche.

Let’s get started.

1. To Create Brand Awareness

Your Business Getting Discovered

If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, has it really fallen?

Admit it.

Chances are you have fantasized of coming up with a product or service so amazing that it literally sells itself. You have sat there daydreaming about how news of it would spread like wildfire, how it will change the world. And also all the money you would make from it 😉

Sorry to burst your bubble buckaroo, but the chances of that happening are worse than a snowball’s in hell.

In the digital space, a “build it and they will come” mentality is sure to get you disappointed. Effort has to be put in to acquire the right potential customers, drive them to your online store, and get them to actually pay for your service or product.

2. To Stop Stealing From Your Customers

You Are Stealing From Your (Potential) Customers

I know, I know.

This is a little cryptic and nonsensical, but hear me out for a moment.

“If you have a product or service you believe in — one that truly helps others — it’s your responsibility to do everything you can to market and sell it in the most effective way possible. Because if you don’t, you’re stealing from those who need you most.”

Marie Forleo

Let’s take that even further. If you have a message to share with the world and you fail to get it out there, you’re stealing. If you have a big idea for a blog post and you don’t write it, you’re stealing. If you don’t share your true voice with the world, you’re stealing. Because there’s someone out there RIGHT NOW who needs what you have to offer! Someone who needs to hear it from you (and only you!)…And if you don’t express it, you won’t make the difference you were born to make.

That’s why you need to get your product, service and message out there in a way that hits home with the people who need to hear it most. So you can stop stealing, and start making a difference.

Look, you are on this planet for a reason. You have something to offer which other people need to hear about. If I don’t remind you of this then I would also be stealing from you. I know marketing makes you cringe but you have to do it, OK?

Besides, you’re too good to be a thief :).

3. To Establish Trust Within Your Niche

You and Your Customers

Whenever you carry out marketing online, you are engaging with your customers and other potential leads.

By posting photos of your products or services, writing epic content to educate your customers, answering customer questions and displaying customer testimonials, you establish your business as an authority in its niche and you also build up social proof. These forms of persuasion will make people more likely to purchase from you and become repeat customers.

So there you have it. Hopefully, by now, you have started seeing the importance of marketing your online business and why you should engage in it.

Now all that’s left is to take action. May the force be with you :).
