An embodiment of divine beauty
the ultimate freedom of expression
when the rhyme is in your rhythm
supple hands gesturing
symbols from heaven
musical anklets strum
to the beats of the drum
a soul
lost in deific articulation
succumb;
to the language
of Bharatnatyam.

Fun fact: I have learned this beautiful dance form (which originated in South India) for 7 years in my early school years. I even went on to complete my Arangettam which is a graduation ceremony undertaken after the successful completion of a series of dances.

However I recall, at practice sessions I would often be pulled up for doing every other step other than Bharatnatyam. My teacher would gently scold, “Tasneem, that’s not Bharatnatyam.” And I would whisper, “But it’s dance.”

I have full respect for this and every other dance form. However for me;

“Dance is freedom.”

When one dances, one forgets everything else and feels blissfully happy.

But it’s dance! :)
