Light of Day

When there are no more tears
and the lilt of your tongue
sends a sweet caress
and the moon smiles in your direction
there —
the light
resides.

When blue is not the color
of your words
and a baby’s giggle shifts your mood
and puppy paws touch your face
in awe of your existence
there —
the light resides.

When casual conversations
of death and life offer wisdom
and the pulse of growth beats on
and twenty-four books later
you feel a sense of wisdom
there —
the light resides.

When your heart continues to love
and opens itself to others who need
it more than you
and the thump of every beat
sets you free from your own
shackles of torment
and the end of summer draws near
there —
the light resides.

In all corners
of every walled up place
and in ditches of worn down roads
and on flights shaken by turbulent skies
there —
when you least expect it
is where the light resides.
