Rain dove

The mourning doves
slink across the lawn
looking for leftover
seeds from autumn

The slender one flutters
up to the clothesline
Shelly repurposed
for Christmas lights

I was supposed to take them down

A log in the woodstove
sounds like a car backfiring
and the bird swivels its
head as though it heard

I see wild eyes
through the window
already suspicious
and preparing to go

Used to being hunted, it won’t stick around

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
