Vertical Light -SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE, MEXICO By Thomas Schaller

“Light in all its myriad of
expressiveness
is central to
all my work.”

“But in the medium of watercolor, light is literally the one thing the artist does not paint. It emanates from the surface of the paper itself — left completely exposed, or shining through the transparent washes.
So what one does not paint in a watercolor is just as powerful as what one does paint. In this sense, watercolor can be seen as a subtractive process. The artist paints the shadows that reveal the light.

Also, my work is almost always a study in the juxtaposition of opposites: light vs. dark, warm tones vs. cool, vertical elements vs. horizontal ones, and the man-made vs. the natural.

All these concepts are at play here in this painting.

At first it may seem that the facade of the beautiful old building is the subject of the work. But the building is in fact left largely unpainted with much of the pure white paper seen.

This work follows the course of that light — connecting the eye, the heart, and the soul from the human plane, up and up to the infinite arching above.”

The subject of Vertical Light is the brilliant Mexican light winding its way down from the heavens through the tropical foliage to the sun-baked plaza below.
