It might be the beginning of the end.

It was the 23rd of June, 2016 in Britain when UK Independence Party (UKIP) leader Nigel Farage declared the day as “Independence Day”. It was the end of the Brexit Vote, wherein a majority of Britain’s registered populace chose to leave the European Union. Stock Markets went “cray cray”, Farage drank to his heart’s content, and this “new dawn” led to the beginning of the end.

Yet the title of my piece contains another name: Republican Presidential Nominee (of the time of writing) Donald Trump. These two have a common link, and the “beginning of the end” might not necessarily be new, but a trend which has chosen to return.

MOB RULE. Fear and cynicism is an effective tool for “ultranationalists” to win hearts and minds. (Cartoon by Cris Niño Sulla)

Let’s be blunt, Trump and Farage all live on pandering to the public’s fears. Specifically, as Stephen Colbert expressed, “rising threats of terrorism and liberal culture appeal to conservatives… all falling under the umbrella of fear.”

YES, FEAR! Exhibit A: As more Syrians rush out of their homeland to escape the chaos, conservatives must believe that there is some way to keep the terrorists away! Why not brand all Middle Easterners as terrorists? As Trump explained. “I’m calling for a complete shutdown of Muslims entering… until we figure out what the hell is going on!”

What about liberal culture? Rising acceptance among races and don’t even get me started on marriage equality again. White Americans have to take their country back, just like the white “natives” who fought foreign colonizers.

In a nutshell, not giving in to fear is the best way to survive. Hitler pandered through fear, and if he did, any idiot can, and “Taking your country back” is the key ingredient to ruling men!
