Jantar Mantar: A place where Astronomy meets Architecture

“Jantar Mantar” means "instruments for measuring the harmony of the heavens", It consists of 13 Architectural Astronomy instruments.

“Jantar Mantar” is situated in 5 places across northern part of India namely: New Delhi, Jaipur, Varanasi, Mathura and Ujjain.

“Jantar Mantar” is situated in 5 places namely: New Delhi, Jaipur, Ujjain, Mathura and Varanasi which was built during 1724 and 1735 by then Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, who oversaw the construction of Jantar Mantar which followed the different Architectural styles of different cultures.

The huge instruments in intricate masonry offer an accurate measurement of time, the declination of the sun, the attitude and the azimuth, the position of constellations in the sky for the day, the eclipses and the allied astronomical phenomena. It is both, a feat of science and a work of architecture.

It is an Architectural marvel and at the same time one of the best places for Astronomy lovers to visit.

Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II was then the king of Amber in the present day Indian state of Rajasthan whose capital is Jaipur named after Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II who is said to be the founding father of city of Jaipur. Jaipur is called by it’s nickname “Pink City”.

Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II was born on 3rd November, 1688 in Amber and died in year 1743 on 21st September in Jaipur.

Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II was India’s one of the greatest Astronomer and Astrologer (those times — both Astrology and Astronomy were one and the same, they were studied as twin Science for a period of time in History).

Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II ascended the throne at a young age of 11 after the demise of his father, as said by court Astrologer it is said that “Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II” would attain knowledge, glory and fame beyond anybody’s imagination.

The “Jantar Mantar” built by him is a timeless legacy and living proof of his incredible feat achieved by him.

It is one of the India’s Historical heritage and cultural pride of India, a monument of achievement of India.
