#NEWS | PSHS–MC students participate in 7th IYRC

TOKYO, Japan — Thirteen Batch 2024 students from Philippine Science High School–Main Campus (PSHS-MC) recently presented their English 5 research papers at the 7th International Young Researchers’ Conference (IYRC).
The event was held in person at the University of Tokyo last June 17 and virtually via Zoom the following day.
The IYRC is a conference where high school students can publish research from various disciplines and discuss their findings to an international audience.
As a requirement for their English 5 class, the Batch 2024 students were tasked to create a humanities-related concept paper. They were then given an option to implement it as a case study for a chance to join IYRC.
PSHS — MC submitted eight research papers, which were all accepted by the IYRC. They are as follows:
- “Disseminate to Deceit: The Impact of Fake News on Social Media on Gen Z Filipinos’ Political Stances” by Bernice Gonzalez and John Daniel Dela Cruz
- “Holding to Your Horoscopes: Its Effect on Post-Pandemic Relationships Among Philippine Science High School Students” by Ysabel Denise Austria and Bianca Lorraine Bueno
- “Study Strategies and Recurring Learning Issues of Philippine Science High School Main Campus Students” by Zsarina Timbreza
- “The Effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Christmas Traditions of the Families of PSHS-MC Batch 2024 Students” by Luch Marcus Mikhail Tolin and Ethan Anilov Norcio
- “The Effects of a Post-Roe America on Filipino Women’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights” by Bianca Marie Sacramento
- “The Power of Love: The Effects of Grade 11 Students’ Romantic Relationships on Their Academic Motivation” by Yannis Añonuevo and Salvador Recio
- “The ‘Tumblr Sexyman’ Internet Phenomenon and its Influence on Perceived Attractive Traits among Late Adolescents” by Reina Elysse Benoza
- “Common Practices of Pandemic Speakers and the Influence of the Virtual Modality” by Davis Nicholo Magpantay and Julianne Earl Sales
All of the student researchers traveled to Japan except for Bueno, Dela Cruz, Norcio, Magpantay, and Sales. Magpantay and Sales opted to do their presentation online.
Eleven Batch 2024 students together with Batch 2025 students Jayden Diaz, Chloe Zampaga, Victoria Ordona, and teacher-chaperone Mr. Charles De Guzman composed the PSHS-MC cluster.
“For me, it was an exciting and rewarding experience to share our ideas in front of fellow students from different backgrounds,” Austria shared when asked about her experience presenting to an international throng.
“Our hard work and efforts in making the paper really paid off to experience that day,” she added.
Instead of presenting research papers, the Batch 2025 students joined the IYRC Medicine and Research Summer Program and listened to the various research presentations as part of their Science Immersion Program (SIP).
“Some presentations were quite complicated and advanced while others were funny and relatable. But I found all of them interesting to listen to,” Diaz replied when asked how she found the research presentations.
The date of the next IYRC has yet to be announced.
