The Social Science unit released a position paper on Monday, September 5, expressing concern over the planned burial of dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. A petition was also opened to interested faculty and staff that want to express their support of the unit’s stance.

The full text of the paper is detailed below.

“Social Science Teachers’ Position Paper”

Adhering to the Philippine Science High School’s core values, which is the pursuit for the search of the untarnished truth, the Social Science teachers of the Philippine Science High School-Main Campus expresses its deep concern over the Administration’s choice of burying the late President Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

As educators of history, we strive to impart upon the next generation the value of history in order that they would learn from its mistakes and that they would save themselves from making the same mistake again.

The mere technicality of the law should never be an enough basis to set aside the unhealed wounds of the past, but rather the nation’s state, which breathes life into the spirit of the law, should prevail.

We highly respect the importance of following the letter of the law. However, we also firmly believe that we should not lose sight of the spirit behind the law. That the mere technicality of the law should never be an enough basis to set aside the unhealed wounds of the past, but rather the nation’s state, which breathes life into the spirit of the law, should prevail. And the nation’s state speaks through its countless accounts of history, from its people’s wailing cries, to the echoes of empty graves of disappeared loved ones. They speak out: Do not erase us from history.

Let us never forget our brothers and sisters, the Pisay Martyrs, nor their sacrifices. For without them, we would never be here, free from tyranny and oppression. If we choose to bury Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, we may as well have chosen to bury the truth that we strive to search for along with him.
