Students showcase Filipino costumes in Lakan at Lakambini ng Pisay 2016
In line with the school’s Buwan ng Wika celebration, selected students participated in the Lakan at Lakambini ng Pisay 2016 contest held at the Advanced Science and Technology Building Exhibit Hall last August 26.
The contest featured traditional Filipino costumes worn by pairs of male and female students selected from each year level prior to the event.
By pair, the students showcased their costumes on a red carpet set up in the venue. A question and answer portion answered individually then followed.
The panel of judges composed of Humanities teachers Erin De la Cruz, Melody Hernandez, and Eileen Sarmago selected the winners for the Grades 7-9 and Grades 10-11 categories. During their deliberation, the school’s dance club, SAGALA, performed an intermission number.
For the Grades 7-9 category, Yves Lazaro of Grade 9 and Almira Redoble of Grade 8 were crowned Lakan at Lakambini ng Wika, respectively. They were followed by Matthew Garcia and Annika Gozum of Grade 9 in second place, and by Bertrand Diola of Grade 9 and Sophia Medina of Grade 8 in third place.
For Grades 10-11, classmates Kinn Villaluna and Pauline Aviquivil of Grade 10 placed first. They were followed by Robert Diel Abdao and Marla Abao of Grade 11 in second place, and Prince Romeo Gan and Patricia Sabido of Grade 10 in third place.
“Despite the cultural diversity present in our country, we have Filipino, [our] common language, to unify us all,” said Lakambini ng Wika Aviquivil after the event. “Nurturing and cultivating our language upholds our national identity and sets us apart from other nations. Our language is uniquely beautiful and it is something we Filipinos should always be proud of.”
The event was organized by the school’s Filipino Unit and hosted by students Vince Delos Santos and Charlene Mercado of Grade 10.
Buwan ng Wika is celebrated by schools all around the country every month of August.
