An essential tool in the toolbox of any strategist is the wayback machine. If you’re not familiar, the wayback machine is a digital archive of websites in some cases going back to the mid 1990’s. While not every site, and certainly not all of the images, files, and pages on sites have been archived, you’ll generally find success looking up older versions websites. It’s always fun to look back, but also valuable if you’re trying to show the evolution of your presence (or the lack thereof of your your competition).

Recently, YouTube, in an effort to help businesses get started with shooting video ads, released “Director”. Director has two parts: an app and a service. The app lets you choose from dozens of templates — like “all about your business”, or “staff profiles” — then walks you through exactly how to shoot the video, including camera angles and even the questions to ask. It also allows you to pair the video with a music bed and easily add a voice over. The app is free and represents a great way to quickly shoot video that could be used in a variety of ways. In addition, for advertisers that spend a mere $150 in advertising, YouTube “Director Onsite” will pair you with a filmmaker who will help you write a script and even come shoot the video for you. Onsite is currently only available in six major US Markets.

Beacons — small devices that communicate with mobile (and other) devices using low energy bluetooth — are making proximity marketing a real possibility for marketers. One company, Truth Labs, also thinks beacons can help us understand the workplace. Using Estimote beacons placed strategically throughout their office, paired with an app installed on participating employees phones to help monitor their motion, Truth Labs was able to see how employees moved about the office, when they were most productive, and other interesting patterns. The outcome is a beautifully navigable story you can find here:
