10 BEST DYSTOPIAN NOVELS FOR YOUNG ADULTS

Dystopian Fiction — Pix's Credit: Pixabay

Dystopian fiction has the power to take you into a world that our world might become one day (no harm in imagining!). The genre helps us to imagine the most unimaginable stuff that you would never imagine otherwise.

I prefer a good dystopian book over a sugary romance novel, but mind you, the book has got to have an excellent plot that sets off my mind. If you are looking out for a new dystopian novel or want to explore something new, this list of books will surely keep you entertained.

1. The Maze Runner by James Dashner

Thomas wakes up in a strange world and finds out that he remembers nothing except his first name. He and other boys trapped in a maze must figure a way out. What follows next is a series of twists and turns you can find challenging to keep pace. After reading this series, you will pant with delight and wish that the series never ended!

2. The Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins

Katniss Everdeen’s real adversity starts when she gets compelled to participate in the Hunger Games to try her best to outlive 23 other people in an enclosed arena.
Her each move reeks of rebellion against the Capitol, the territory that rules over the entire country of Panem. The Capitol hates any challenges that will endanger their sadistic reign. Katniss becomes the face of the ongoing rebellion amid growing tensions and has to bear a lot to survive through it. Will she succeed?

3. The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

A girl questions the relevance of a device that forbids crime. The device tortures criminals by making them go through their scary memories. Not only that, but it also licenses the government to dominate a criminal’s emotions. This book will keep you on edge with its twisty twists.

4. The Giver Series by Lois Lowry

Jonas lives in a ‘painless’ society in which everyone gets a specific role. He has to take responsibility for everyone’s bad memories. While he is on duty, he realizes how fickle his society is and goes out on an intriguing mission. This quartet of novels is powerful in every way and will indeed become your favorite.

5. The Divergent Series by Veronica Roth

Tris Prior lives in a world composed of five factions; each stands for a distinct virtue or trait. She finds out that she is different and has to be cautious of her identity. She can’t afford to let anyone know about her because people like her are in danger. After this, the series tells us about how Tris and her comrades overthrow the people who dare to suppress others, accompanied by exciting stuff here and there. I loved the first two books of the Divergent trilogy. The series is worth reading and don’t forget to watch the movies too!

6. Partials by Dan Wells

The government is making efforts to make women pregnant because strange humanoids have demolished the human civilization with a dreaded virus. Unfortunately, all the babies born cannot survive the virus until a girl gets hold of the humanoids’ genetic data. The book is a gripping read that revolves around survival, hope, and humanity.

7. Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

Aria ventures out into the dangerous wastelands after her mother goes missing. She has led a sheltered life all this while and has to make unforeseen choices and alliances during some tricky situations. The book teaches a lot more than just the game of survival.

8. The Host by Stephenie Meyer

We all are familiar with Stephanie Meyer’s brilliant Twilight series. The plot of this book is intriguing and somewhat complicated, but you will love it. Human beings infected by alien souls permeate the world. One girl named Melanie Stryder struggles with the alien’s soul inside her. A rapid page-turner that will keep you hooked till the end.

9. Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

The book challenges our trivial and empty understanding of beauty. It narrates Tally, a girl who escapes the rigorous cosmetic surgery of beautifying herself and her friend Shay. When she faces a deciding moment between being ugly and her friend, her life takes a complicated turn. The book, packed with the right amount of romance, intrigue, and danger, makes a fantastic read.

10. The Rains by Gregg Hurwitz

The book will give you goosebumps as you read the story of Patrick and his brother, who are working hard to find a cure against a parasite. If they don’t, they are at risk of turning into zombies that have lost every figment of humanity. They also have to bear the burden of attacks by other zombie-beings. You will hesitate to put this book down once you begin reading it.
