Observer of Humanity
“I’m fascinated by human behavior; observing people and seeing how much story gets told without a lot of dialogue, and how much our brain fills in.”
— Thomas Schlamme
You are more than the wisdom you possess. You are more than the experiences you’ve had. You are more.
You are more because you have all of humanity to draw from. All of history and all of the crowds around you are at your disposal.
“I think that my job is to observe people and the world, and not to judge them.”
— Haruki Murakami
To gain the wisdom you need, you must read, experience, observe. All around you there is more experience and wisdom that the characters in your stories can benefit—or suffer—from.
“A writer, I think, is someone who pays attention to the world.”
— Susan Sontag
Because of all the collective wisdom and experience that you will attain, you are hereby responsible to pass on that wisdom to all who will listen and read your words. Society needs your wisdom, your insight into humanity.
You are standing on the shoulders of giants—a phrase that is well over-used and I only use it now to have the opportunity to urge you to never use it—and as such, you must let the next generation stand on your shoulders so that they will have a strong foundation. And thus humanity will reach ever higher, ever upward toward the Infinite.
“To acquire knowledge, one must study; but to acquire wisdom, one must observe.”
— Marilyn Vos Savant
