We thought flares and bell bottoms had long been buried in the depths of our closets… but today’s designers have seemingly awoken the dead. Who would’ve thought the surge of 70's fashion would greet us again? London Fashion week (LFW) summoned a wave of nostalgia as its runway showcased the revival of the seventies- rekindling our love for Saturday night fever, flower power and the denim craze.

London Fashion week has found its muse in the past. Last year, it was the 1990's. But, thank God this year, it’s the 70's. Nearing the end of 2016, we are slowly waving goodbye to summer’s prairie trends and welcoming back the superiors of the 70's fashion age- denim and floral.

LFW introduced Caine London, a denim dominated design collaboration, presented the classic denim tux, high rise mom jeans and oversized sweats in tribute of the 70's. Fashion blogger, Anna Lorena, says “I think the 70's will be everywhere in 2017” with Gucci embracing the 70's trend with a studio 54 redux at Milan FW. Prada and Versace also ruling the runway with flatforms and flares.

But the question remains, was the 70's dead in the first place? I beg to differ..

The seventies acts as a river beneath its bridges, constantly flowing through the decades, carrying its influence beneath the current. Notice how every summer a vibrant maxi dress is seen fluttering in the summer breeze? Bingo! The maxi remains a timeless trend from the 70's. It was an influential decade that cradled the growth of the 90's. 2016 has seen an obsession with 90's style. Instagram is full of teens posing beside graffiti-drenched walls, draped in beloved crop tops and flatforms. If only they knew that their beloved 90's babies are the spiritual children of the 70's.

Remember Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears’ classic denim ensemble (an iconic moment of the late 90's early 00's)? This would not have happened without the 70's. Sure, it wasn’t the best way to wear denim…but Marques’Almeida is hoping to give the head-to-toe denim outfit its fashion seal of approval for SS17. During their September show for LFW, double denim was given its round of applause as these Britney-inspired designs were mingled with a sprinkle of flamboyance; with big dagger collars and extravagant flares.

But what are they saying in the real world? With Brick Lane at the centre of vintage fashion, we asked stores at the iconic E1 shopping postcode about what staples are set to be seen on our streets. Brick Lane Vintage tells of the resurrection of flared jeans and stiff-legs, with 2017 embracing the return of the classics. Those at Beyond Retro say that we will see the return of big collared shirts, which of course has been seen on the “most iconic duo”, Kendall and Kylie Jenner during Paris Fashion Week.
