Bruno’s back — but not in the way we expected. In conjunction with Anderson .Paak, Silk Sonic boomed onto the scene with their first single, Leave the Door Open. Since 24K Magic way back in 2016, I’ve been eagerly awaiting Bruno Mars’ next project. I was quite surprised when Silk Sonic made their grand entrance, but interested. Here are some of my thoughts on their debut single!

Leave the Door Open Music Video from Bruno Mars’ Youtube

When Leave the Door Open begins, you are immediately swept into a dreamy, chill world by the rich piano. The vibe of the song is already immaculate and the tone is set from the start. Then we're taken into the first verse by Anderson with a smooth beat. I love the percussion on this track. It provides so much support to the melody and gives the whole thing a nice groove to it. Here we get some classic R&B content of flirting with a lover — very reminiscent of Bruno’s vibe on 24K Magic but turned up a notch. Silk Sonic’s sound on this track is majorly R&B and has even less modern hip-hop influences than 24K Magic did.

Bruno’s vocals on the pre-chorus and chorus are absolutely beautiful. The way he effortlessly glides up to the high note that slides us into the chorus is unmatched. I really believe he is one of the most talented male vocalists currently performing. I’m not exactly sure what instrument it is, I'm thinking guitar, but it plays a faint descending melody, and it's delightful. I’m not sure what it is about that snippet that pops up throughout the track, but it hits me just the right way. It’s so mellow and cool — it just strengthens the tone of the overall track. It’s crazy how something as small as that can stick out as a key enjoyment of a piece.

After the silky-smooth chorus, Anderson .Paak takes it away, once again, for the next verse. It’s very similar to the first verse content-wise— a serenade and a call for a lover to be with him. Anderson’s vocals blend perfectly in the style of the song, which makes sense since he is an R&B artist. His vocals also match nicely with Bruno’s tone. They give off enough of a similar vibe that it's fitting to be in the same song, but not so similar that it feels like a Bruno or Anderson solo piece. We then go into another chorus where we’re once again serenaded by Bruno.

Once the chorus is over, the song takes a turn into a more instrumental part with some vocals from both Mars and Paak interjected here and there. This section really lends to the dreamy and rich quality of the song. The funky groove makes you want to nod your head and its laid-back energy is infectious. Then, after another, slightly modified, chorus, the instrumental section comes back for the outro, which nicely fades out. While sometimes fade-outs can be kind of corny and I don't overly like the use of them, I believe that it fits this song very well.

This track is a joy to listen to. Its suave, smooth, and, well, silky! The lush piano and mellow groove wash over you and provides an excellent base for Anderson’s and Bruno’s vocals to shine through. This song fits their voice and vibe so well. They set the tone of the song perfectly at the start and just double down on it the whole time. While there isn’t much substance-wise in terms of political statements or big moral messages, that's perfectly fine! Not every song needs to be some kind of big statement. Sometimes just a fun piece is all a person needs. Personally, I’m thankful that we got this fun, groovy track that's just simple and enjoyable. This makes me very excited to see what the duo does next!

The door will definitely be open for the time of the next release by the suave Silk Sonic!
