Keeping Tabs on Trump, Bad Judgment, and The Interview

James Franco and Seth Rogen in The Interview.

So, Kathy Griffin is back in the news. During a photoshoot, she held up a fake severed head that resembled Donald Trump. She has received quite the backlash for this stunt and while I believe violent rhetoric like this is not the most effective way of expressing a dislike or a hatred for Trump (and certainly, were the shoe on the other foot, there would be an uproar from the left. Which there has been. Like, when Trump threatened Hillary Clinton or when Barack Obama was depicted as being hanged. There’s been an uproar. Only from the left, of course), I’m struggling with one thing. What is the difference between Griffin’s photoshoot and The Interview, the satirical 2014 film from Seth Rogen, James Franco, and Evan Goldberg that depicted Kim Jong-un (Randall Park) getting his head blown up. The Interview received mixed reviews, but only for its humor and not for its treatment of the North Korean dictator. I am sure there are opinions on this and I am genuinely curious to hear them. I don’t know the difference and I’d like to be educated about it.

Additionally, another hot take revolving around the Kathy Griffin debacle is that it, much like the “covfefe” tweet from Trump, is not nearly as important as the issues at hand. For example, the human rights violations in Chechnya, Trump’s proclivity towards pulling out of the Paris Climate Accord, and the unending desire in the GOP to take healthcare away from millions are all rightfully more pressing and more impactful for the lives of the average American than the latest crazy thing Kathy Griffin did. So we gotta keep our eyes on the ball. The only thing is that with Trump, he’s created a big ball from his very tiny and insecure balls. So there’s a lot to keep track of. And his bullshit now with Barron Trump’s reaction to the Kathy Griffin stunt is more Trump bullshit. It’s okay to call bullshit what it is and still want to fix the legislative bullshit happening all around us. This is uncharted territory for us now. We’re in covfefe territory.
