The famous historian spills the “cola” on his true passion

What inspired you to start RC Cola?

My inspiration was twofold: One, the need to fund my scholarship. Two, my love of cola.

Why did you choose to call it RC Cola and not just Robert Caro Cola?

It was a branding decision. Branding has always fascinated me.

Were you ever concerned that people would think it was Rod Carew Cola?

Yes, especially in the seventies, especially because his game was so light and crisp.

Did Lyndon Johnson or Robert Moses ever drink your cola? And did they know it was yours?

I’m told that Johnson once held a twenty-ounce bottle of my cola and likened it to “Jumbo.” Moses did not drink cola. Perhaps he should have.

How do you enjoy your RC Cola?

[Laughs] How don’t I? I like it with cereal —

Do you mean in the bowl, in the place of milk?

Yes. I like it iced. I like it hot. I like to write in it.

What do you mean by that, you like to write in it?

In my office, I keep a sizable antique clawfoot bathtub. Every morning, I fill it with my cola — it takes quite a bit — and disrobe and sit inside it while I write by hand.

Is the cola cold?

It begins at room temperature and warms slightly.

Are you tempted to drink it?

Certainly I am. But one must remain disciplined. I have a glass when I finish.
