100-word Microfiction
“You should sleep, Sir.”
I ignore him as I chew on another ardrella leaf, quickly swallowing the first mouthful of bitterness. “There has to be an answer here somewhere. Try this one.” I toss a book into the boy’s lap.
“What if they’re saying the incantations wrong?”
Sighing, I reread a faded scroll. “After centuries, we are suddenly in error? Hardly. The spirits are not listening for a reason we must discover.”
“Perhaps they can’t hear us?”
“Ridiculous. Of course they can.”
The boy shrugs and returns the book to the pile. “Then perhaps we should start listening.”
