Wall Street is an allegory for the financial markets, a metaphor for elitism and economic power politics. Here are three interesting facts about this famous street.

1. Its name comes from, well, a wall.

Enslaved folk constructed a long, tall wooden wall during the Anglo-Dutch Wars. The Dutch settlers named its street ‘’Het Cingel ofte Stadt Wall,” eventually morphing into ‘Wall Street.’

2. George Washington’s inauguration happened on Wall Street.

Wall Street has the Federal Hall, built in 1842, the place of the USA’s first-ever presidential inauguration.

3. The ‘Charging Bull’ was illegally placed.

Arturo di Modica, the sculptor behind the Charging Bull, had no permit to display his creation. So he secretly waited one evening to drop it. The NYC police removed it later, only to return it to another spot soon after.
