A Visit from Tashi
Every book group needs a canine observer
Tashi has been coming to my book group since he was adopted, a rescue of indeterminate age, nine years ago by Sue. We have no idea how anyone could have abandoned a dog like Tashi, but that’s his story and he keeps it to himself.
As a general rule, Tashi surveys the group and settles down to listen with disinterest. But during his last visit he paused long enough (above) to seem to say, “You people have all this figured out? Hmpfff.”
Thereafter he retreated from the literary fray. That is, until Sue left for a cup of tea and he took a protective position under her chair.
On her return, he listened briefly to the discussion before falling asleep.
The unvoiced opinions of a wise old dog are invaluable for any book group that ever begins to take itself too seriously.
