An Educated Citizenry
It was Thomas Jefferson who was reported to have said, “An educated citizenry is a vital requisite for our survival as a free people.” Although this quote may be spurious, it still intuitively rings true.
Knowledge is Power. Therefore, those with power attempt to control access to knowledge. During America’s colonial period, education was limited to white males. Indigenous Americans were herded into boarding schools to control their educational content, and America’s enslaved population was denied schooling.
With a midterm election a few weeks away, politicians employ 30-second sound bites to convince voters of their worthiness of support. They paint a picture on a canvas of their interpretation to show what is “best for the county.”
An educated citizenry makes informed decisions and casts a thoroughly reasoned vote. Contradictory to the apparent beliefs of wealthy power brokers, a sound byte is not an education.
