Like most people, the first time I saw the Australian comedian Celeste Barber was on Instagram. I laughed aloud — at the time that was something of a miracle.

It was 2019 and I was in the midst of a life-threatening depression. I hated myself and was entirely, disastrously, disconnected from my body (which was experiencing debilitating chronic pain).

And there appeared Celeste, with her irreverent physical comedy that’s at once absurdly funny and clever social commentary. I laughed hard. Then I watched lots of her other videos. For at least a little while, the noisy chaos in my head quieted.

Now I’m better, and Celeste is one of my more recent Taliswomen, inspiring me daily to laugh at myself and the world.
