Even if You Have a Strong Belief in God, You’re Still an Agnostic

Some people talk about agnosticism as if it’s a lighter version of atheism — as if they are two points on the same spectrum.

But that’s not true. Atheism and agnosticism answer two different questions:

  • Atheism is about whether you believe.
  • Agnosticism is about whether you know.

But since there is no definitive evidence for God, none of us knows. So, we are all agnostics.

As atheists.org states:

Atheism is one thing: A lack of belief in gods. Atheism is not an affirmative belief that there is no god nor does it answer any other question about what a person believes. It is simply a rejection of the assertion that there are gods.”

So, if you are unsure whether God exists but think he probably doesn’t, you are an atheist. You are also an agnostic, but so is everyone else.
