In small amounts, sodium is necessary for the normal functioning of the body. Nevertheless, too high sodium consumption is associated with an increased risk for hypertension (elevated blood pressure).

The recommended daily sodium intake is less than 2,300 mg, which equals approximately 1 teaspoon of sodium chloride (table salt). However, an estimated 9 out of 10 Americans consume too much sodium.

If your sodium intake is excessive, consider simple diet modifications to curb it:

  1. Checking Nutrition Facts labels — As most consumed sodium is hidden in prepackaged or processed foods, reading their labels may help make healthy choices.
  2. Consuming more fresh fruits and vegetables, most of which have relatively low sodium content.
  3. Cooking with less salt (herbs can be used to add flavour instead).
  4. Limiting the use of condiments high in sodium, such as soya sauce.
  5. Restricting the consumption of cured, smoked, or brined foods, which have high sodium content.
