Five Years From Now

Consider, for a moment:

A high-powered businessman retires to the country.

A visiting friend finds him planting a tiny avocado tree.

“How long till that bears fruit?”

“About five years.”

“Why bother? You may not be here to enjoy it?”

“True. But I’m sure that, if I don’t plant it now, I won’t be enjoying avocados in five years.”

Sometimes our lives are like that. We work in hope.

We exercise to become fit. We put effort into building a relationship. We write, hoping that our words will make a difference to someone. One day, we may make a living from it.

There are no guarantees.

What’s certain is, if we do not put in the work now, we will not be running marathons, thriving with our partner or making a living from writing five years from now.
