It’s the third time my son interrogates me about God. I tell him God is a woman. I wonder who told him about God.

Religion is the root of all evil. Every war, prejudice, abuse of power, is rooted in the worship of God: a made-up entity with the face of an old man.

I say, “God doesn’t exist.” It doesn’t work, so I go back to the original truth. “God is a woman. Remember? Who told you about God?”

“Daddy,” whispers the girl, who’s just walked in. Sure. Daddy, who doesn’t go to church, doesn't read the Bible, whose God is a tool to raise his boy to be like himself: the image of the almighty — to be adored and obeyed, to rule and punish, and justify his evil. Daddy. Of course.
