How Will You React to the Stranger? by Nancy Blackman, short story, advent, poem, poetry

Haibun — a form of poetry that combines haiku with prose

She passed wistfully
Stranger on the city street
Smiles exchanged. Delight.

Then I pause, taking a seat on a bench
The Autumn day rising up through me
The beautiful trees surround me
Beautiful colors rejoice with me
And again, I smile

One is a stranger, one is not.
And still, I smile. And the trees smile. And the stranger smiles.
We all smile at the passing seconds of beauty.

And yet we smile.

May it be so for you.

In the Advent season, may you pause to see the beauty, smile at a stranger, and rejoice.
