Madeleine L’Engle, My First Favorite Author
A Taliswoman Short
It could only have been in the little house-turned-library that I discovered Madeleine L’Engle. I was a little girl and rode my bike there almost every day.
Her young heroine Vicky gripped me — I saw myself in the character to the point that it made my heart race; that had never happened before.
When I found out L’Engle’s husband was a daily presence in my home (he was an actor in All My Children), I felt our connection to be ordained. I wrote to her & she wrote back, thanking me. It was a small kindness I never forgot.
Her book A Ring of Endless Light inspired me to write my first poem at 8. It was published in a kids’ magazine and earned $50 — the most I’ve ever earned for a poem.
How could she not be a Taliswoman?
