The legendary bombshell died just over a decade before I was born. A literal lifetime ago.

Do kids still obsess over her like I did?

I don’t remember the first time I saw her, but I was instantly captivated. I must have been around 9 years old, and I did what I was wont to do; I checked out a book about her from the library.

Among the included pictures was one that shocked me — the icon on a stretcher, in the autopsy room. Her brain had already been weighed.

I didn’t know people did such things.

The tragedy of Norma Jean, the sexy inevitability of the whole thing, arrested my little imagination.

My bedroom walls were covered with posters of her.

Even knowing what I knew, I wanted to be her.
