On a weekend visit from San Francisco to two of my favorite New Mexico cities, all appeared well with the state.

Artist Lincoln Fox’ Indian Shaman and his eagle greeted me at the Albuquerque airport. City streets were abuzz; friends from Tamarind Institute, my favorite lithography studio met me for coffee . . .

But later, walking the downtown streets and crossing a parking lot I came across this outdoor fresco:

Maybe all is not well in New Mexico?

I drove on to Santa Fe with longtime New Mexico citizen friends anyway. They were definitely reassuring about the voices who speak of public art, Native American heritage and the preservation of beauty.

And soon, there it was. The same old moon, shining down on shiny new cars on San Francisco Street in old/new Santa Fe.

For now, all seems quietly well with the West.
