From absolute power to figurehead

England’s highborn feudal lords rebelled against King John’s extortion tactics, enforcing a decree which redistributed power by placing limits on royal authority. Dubbed the Magna Carta, this 1215 agreement included the caveat that a lucrative estate would be proffered to the King.
