In 1884, the Monte Cristo Homestead was built in New South Wales, Australia. Its history is as eerie as it is tragic. Owner Christopher Crawley’s 1920 death began a series of ghostly events.

Elizabeth, his widow, turned reclusive, rarely leaving the haunted house. Her spirit, and others, now reportedly roam its rooms. Visitors feel a scary presence, sometimes seeing Elizabeth with a silver cross.

The homestead’s other ghosts include a maid who fell to her death and a stable boy who tragically burned. Most haunting is the tale of a chained man in the caretaker’s cottage, his spirit marked by clanking chains.

Today, Monte Cristo, steeped in sorrow and spectral sightings, stands as Australia’s most haunted house. This house, a blend of tragedy and the unexplained remains a dark jewel in the crown of Australian history.
