I was 10 years old, and we were leaving Nigeria, headed to Thailand. My mom invited a woman and her daughter to come over. That’s what happened with State Department families. You leave a place; you pass things on.

But I didn’t expect my mother to take my teddy bear out of my arms and give it to the other girl.
